If you’ve been researching Mini Aussiedoodles, you’ve probably already fallen in love with how they look. But before you reserve a puppy, the smarter question to ask is- what are they actually like to live with? Hi! We’re the Stephens family, and have been raising Mini Aussiedoodles here in Silverton, Oregon for over five years. I’ve watched litter after litter grow from tiny, lil’ potato newborns into the kind of dogs that families write me about years later. Our family’s always say their pup is the best thing that has ever happened to their household. This is genuinely my dream job. I bought this land because of my dogs. I wanted them to have room to run, to be themselves, to live well. And every puppy I raise is an extension of my own family.
So when people ask me whether Mini Aussiedoodles are good family dogs, I give them the honest one, from someone who has lived with these dogs every single day.

The Short Answer

Yes. Mini Aussiedoodles are one of the best family dogs you can bring home, but they thrive most in families who understand what they’re getting into. They’re not a “set it and forget it” breed. They are smart, loving, moderately energetic, and deeply bonded to their people. Give them that, and they will be the heart of your home.

What Makes Mini Aussiedoodle Temperament Special

Mini Aussiedoodles are a cross between a Miniature Australian Shepherd and a Miniature/Moyen Poodle. That combination produces a dog that is:
•Highly trainable. Families who adopt from us regularly tell me their puppies pick up commands faster than they expected. These dogs want to please you. They are engaged, attentive, and motivated, especially when positive reinforcement is involved.
•Affectionate and people-oriented. Mini Aussiedoodles love their families deeply. They’re not the type of dog to hang out in another room while you’re home. They want to be near you, involved in whatever you’re doing. I have so many pictures of our Mini Aussiedoodles cuddled up with their family.
•Gentle but playful. They can match the energy of an active household and still settle down for all the pets at the end of the day. Families with kids especially love this balance.
•Curious and confident. When raised with proper socialization (we’ll discuss this more below), Mini Aussiedoodles approach new people, sounds, and situations with curiosity rather than fear.

Every Puppy Has Its Own Personality — But Genetics Matter

One thing that surprises a lot of families? Every puppy in a litter has a distinct personality. Some are bold and adventurous. Others are gentler and more cuddly from day one. Some are the first to charge toward a new toy; others hang back and watch before deciding it’s safe.
This is completely normal, and it’s actually one of the things I love most about raising litters. Getting to know each puppy as an individual, figuring out who they are before they even go home. It’s one of my favorite parts of this job!
What doesn’t vary much? Genetics. The parents’ temperament plays a significant role in the puppies. That’s exactly why I’m so selective about my breeding dogs. One of our Momma dogs, Ruby, is one of the most even-tempered, warm, and confident dogs I’ve ever known. Her calm, loving nature is a big reason I chose her for our program. And you can see it in her puppies.
Not one of our Mini Aussiedoodles has shown aggression. Not one. Intentional breeding (not solely on coat colors!), and the environment we raise them in makes all the difference.

How We Raise Puppies That Are Ready for Family Life

Temperament isn’t just about genetics. The first eight weeks of a puppy’s life shape who they become. Here’s what that looks like at Silverton Doodles:

Raised in Our Home, Not a Kennel

Every puppy is born and raised inside our home. They grow up with the sounds of a real household like the TV, the dishwasher, people talking, doors opening. They’re not in a barn or an outdoor pen. They’re in our lives, from day one.

Constant Socialization and Handling

From birth, our puppies are handled daily. They get touched, held, spoken to. As they grow, they’re introduced to more experiences. We introduce the puppies to different textures, sounds, people, and situations. We follow early neurological stimulation practices that help build confidence and resilience in young puppies.

Raised Alongside Our Dogs

Our puppies grow up with our other dogs as part of their daily world. They learn dog-to-dog communication naturally. They learn boundaries including from the mama dogs themselves. Ruby and our other dogs gently correct naughty behaviors in the puppies right away. It works better than anything I could do. Our breeding program is a family effort.

Visitors Are Welcome (and Encouraged)

We open our home to families who want to visit their Mini Aussiedoodle, and I genuinely love it. It’s wonderful for the families because they get to meet the puppies and see exactly how they’re raised. But it’s equally wonderful for the puppies. Every new visitor is a socialization opportunity. New smells, new voices, new energy. Ruby is completely unfazed by visitors coming to meet her babies. She welcomes the attention and the extra pets. Her confidence and ease around strangers passes directly into how her puppies respond to new people.

Puppy Yoga

In our early litters, I used to do yoga in the puppy room. I’d roll out my mat, start my practice, and within about 30 seconds I’d have a pile of puppies climbing on me, flopping across my legs, chewing on my hair. It was completely useless as a yoga session and absolutely the best time of my life. Those puppies weren’t afraid of anything. They were curious, bold, playful which is exactly what we want to see.

Are Mini Aussiedoodles Good With Kids?

Yes, and here’s why it works so well:
Mini Aussiedoodles match kids’ energy without being overwhelming. They’re playful enough to run around the yard and patient enough to sit with a quiet child who just wants a cuddle. Families consistently tell me their puppies seem to know when to play and when to settle.
They’re also smart enough to learn household rules quickly, which matters a lot for families with young children. Basic commands, house manners, learning boundaries are what Mini Aussiedoodles pick up fast.
The key is early training and consistent boundaries. These are not lazy dogs. They have bright, active minds and they need engagement. Give them that and they are extraordinary family companions. Skip it and you may end up with a bored, mischievous dog who has found its own entertainment (which is rarely what you had in mind).

Are They Good With Other Pets?

In our experience, yes! Our puppies grow up alongside our dogs and learn the rhythms of a multi-pet household naturally. Many of our families have cats, other dogs, or both, and report that their Mini Aussiedoodle adjusted without much trouble.
As with any breed, early, calm introductions make a big difference.

What Families Tell Us

The messages we get from families months or years after adoption are genuinely one of my favorite things about this job. The most common things we hear:
“He figured out sit and stay in two days.”
“She follows my kids everywhere. like a little shadow.”
“She learns everything so fast.”
“He’s obsessed with our family. Everywhere we go, he wants to come.”
These dogs love their people just like my own dogs.

Is a Mini Aussiedoodle Right for You?

I want to be genuinely helpful here, which means being honest about this amazing dog breed. Mini Aussiedoodles are not the right dog for every family. Here’s a quick run-down.

Mini Aussiedoodles tend to thrive with families who:
•Have an active lifestyle or are willing to give them daily exercise and mental stimulation
•Want a dog that is engaged with the family, not independent
•Are committed to early training and positive reinforcement

They may not be the best fit if:
•You’re looking for a low-maintenance dog
•You’re away from home for long hours without a plan for the dog’s enrichment
•You’re not interested in training

If you’re on the fence, reach out. I’d genuinely rather help you figure out if this is the right breed than place a puppy in a home that isn’t a great match. These are my dogs’ babies which I take seriously.
