9 Healthy Puppies and Zero Tears: Our Litter's First Vet Visit

Posted by Martha Stephens | Silverton Doodles | June 2026

One of my favorite milestones in every litter's journey is the first vet visit. It's the moment where all that early socialization work gets a real world test and I'm so proud to say this litter passed, easy peasy!

On May 30th, we loaded up all nine Mini Aussiedoodle puppies and headed just down the road to Abiqua Animal Clinic here in Silverton, Oregon. We are lucky to have such a wonderful clinic so close to home. Their team there are always so kind, thorough, and genuinely great with puppies.

All 9 Puppies: Happy and Healthy

During the visit, each puppy received their distemper vaccination and a round of dewormer which is standard and important first steps in building a healthy foundation before heading to their new homes.

But here's my favorite part: All puppies did great! No escape artist either.

If you know puppies, you know that's not always a given. A vet's office is a new environment. New smells, new sounds, strangers in scrubs handling them. Some puppies find that overwhelming (which is totally understandable). What helped with their vet visit was how we raise Mini Aussiedoodles. When puppies are raised with daily handling, varied experiences, and the Puppy Culture curriculum from day one, the work we put in during those first weeks pays off in moments exactly like this.

A Little Window Moment

Before each puppy's exam, we held them up to look out the window so that they could have a quiet moment of people-watching from the clinic. Nine tiny faces looking outside and smelling all of the new smells.

It's such a small thing, but it says a lot about how this clinic treats their patients. And watching each puppy take it all in calmly, ears perked, tail going, was such a great experience!

What Does a First Puppy Vet Visit Cover?

For families who are new to puppies, here's what to expect at that first wellness appointment we take our litters to, typically around 6–7 weeks of age:

Physical Examination — The vet checks eyes, ears, heart, lungs, abdomen, and overall body condition. They're looking for anything that might need attention before the puppy goes home.

Distemper Vaccine (DA2PP) — This combo vaccine protects against Distemper, Adenovirus (Hepatitis), Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus. It's the foundation of your puppy's vaccine series and should be boosted every 3–4 weeks until around 16 weeks of age.

Dewormer — Even healthy, well-cared-for puppies can carry intestinal parasites passed through mom. Routine deworming is standard and important.

Weight Check — A good baseline for tracking healthy growth.

After this visit, you'll want to schedule follow-up boosters at 12 weeks and 16 weeks, and your vet will guide you on rabies timing based on your local requirements.

These Puppies Are Almost Ready

This litter is growing fast, and homes are filling up. If you've been thinking about reserving one of these puppies, now is the time to reach out.

They were born healthy, raised in our home, handled daily, and just got a perfect report card from the vet. We couldn't be prouder.
