Task 1: Pup-Proofing Basics

Before your puppy arrives, look at your living space from a puppy’s perspective. Identify potential hazards such as exposed cords, toxic plants, and small objects that can be swallowed or toppled over. By recognizing these risks, you’ll be better equipped to make your home safe for your new puppy.

Task 2: Secure Your Space

Puppies are naturally curious and explorative. Use baby gates to limit access to certain areas until your pup learns the ropes. This helps prevent accidents and eases their transition into their new surroundings. We use baby gates to block off the Christmas tree.

If you wish to not allow pups on furniture, now is the time to be firm on this decision.

Task 3: Loose Wires

Safely concealing wires from your playful puppy is crucial to prevent accidents and maintain a tidy space. Use cable management solutions like clips and sleeves to secure wires along walls or furniture. Position furniture strategically to block access, and consider outlet covers for added safety. Provide engaging toys to redirect your puppy’s attention away from wires.

Task 4: Store Chemicals Safely

Store hazardous substances like cleaning solutions, pesticides, and fertilizers in high, locked cabinets. Stick to original containers with intact labels and dispose of empty containers securely. Seek out pet-friendly cleaning products as much as possible! Bleach is harmful to pets, so use as little and less frequently as possible. These simple yet essential steps will create a safer environment where your dog can enjoy a long and healthy life.

Task 5: Invest in Chew Toys

Puppies need to chew to alleviate teething discomfort and to satisfy their natural instincts. Provide a variety of safe, sturdy chew toys to keep them engaged and prevent them from targeting your furniture or belongings. We use the brand KONG for most chew toys because of their sturdiness without breaking the bank. No rawhide. 2 of my own dogs have had their teeth broken because of rawhide and bones. I have now started to also give them Yak Cheese bars for their teeth.

Task 6: Supervise and Train

While puppy-proofing your home, remember that supervision and training are key. Keeping a watchful eye on your puppy is essential during the early stages to prevent accidents and guide them away from undesirable behaviors. Establishing a consistent routine for meals, playtime, and rest helps create a structured environment that aids house training and overall behavior. Socializing your puppy with various experiences and teaching basic commands like “sit” and “stay” furthers good behavior and builds their confidence. Patience and consistency are essential, and seeking professional guidance ensures your puppy grows into a well-adjusted and happy family member ^_^!
